NO POLITICAL PARTY SHOULD TAKE MILEAGE FROM OLD GOA MOVEMENT, SAYS SAMIL VOLVOIKAR
PANAJI: Congress Leader and Social Worker from Cumbharjua, Samil Volvoikar on Monday urged political parties to stop trying to gain political mileage and demanded for the demolition of the illegal structure in Old Goa.
The Save Old Goa Action committee has been protesting for over 14 days to ensure the demolition of the structure and this satyagraha was organized solely by the niz goenkar. This movement to preserve the Old Goa heritage site has been going on for the last five months and he has extended his support towards this movement from the very first day.
Samil Volvoikar called on the state authorities to preserve the Old Goa heritage site and demolish the illegal structure.
“Before any political party came into the picture, a group of citizens under the banner of Save Old Goa Action committee started a hunger strike from November 24. Daily from 8 am till 6 pm they would sit near the Basilica of Bom Jesus at Old Goa in protest to this illegal structure. Our locals who are sitting there will not back out until they see the structure razed to the ground,” he said.
For the last two weeks, Samil has been part of this agitation and daily joins the locals for around two hours.
One can recall that the Catholic Church of Goa has called on the government to refrain from any acts and decisions which are detrimental to the preservation of the religious and heritage sanctity of Old Goa.
