Following complaints of water shortage in certain areas of Aldona constituency on Tuesday, local MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira conducted an inspection to ascertain the cause of the problem.
Ferreira said that residents of Calvim, Carona, Pantin, Nachinola, Panarim and Lankadem had raised the issue of water scarcity for the past five days.
During the inspection, Ferreira visited Pantim and Nachinola, while at Lankadem, he climbed atop the Sai Nagar government water tank after locals pointed out that water does not get pumped due to low pressure.
“After people complained on the WhatsApp group, we responded and provided water tankers to them. We inspected the tank at Lankadem along with a team of PWD engineers who came after office hours. I am probably the first MLA to climb the tank. I am genuinely concerned about the problem,” Ferreira said.
The MLA told the locals water was not getting pumped due to some technical issues at Assonora water treatment plant as well as some problems along the water pipeline route, and assured that water supply will be restored.
A PWD engineer present at the inspection informed the locals that low pressure had developed due to air pockets in the pipeline, following which the problem was rectified.
The MLA said that the PWD engineers have promised to release water for certain hours during the day.
“There is no justification for not supplying water, everyone should get it. The engineers are doing whatever best can be done. I have also requested them to inform the locals via text message in case the supply will be delayed during the day due to low pressure. As a long term solution, there is a proposal to replace the pipeline with a bigger one. I will make sure to get this sanctioned from PWD minister Nilesh Cabral,” he said.
