the Mapusa municipal council on Friday imposed a fine of `5 lakh on defaulters and apprehended 10 defaulters and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 within half an hour . this is a move by the MMC in an attempt to crack down on the menace of garbage dumping in Mapusa during the night time in the last 20 days,
,chairperson Shubhangi Vaigankar along with chief officer Amitesh Shirvoikar in the presence of vice-chairperson Chandrasekhar Benkar, councillor Viraj Phadke, inspectors, supervisors and MMC employees formed various groups which were deployed at all the black spots in the city to crack down on dumping of garbage along the roadside.
During the drive, a fine of `50,000 was levied on the violators who had thrown garbage and the rickshaw driver was fined `25,000 for dumping waste.
Speaking to reporters MMC chief officer Shirvoikar said that people throw garbage at the black spots in the city at night and the municipal employees have to clean it the next day a
“There are 46 black spots in Mapusa and within a month, we want to reduce all these black spots to zero.” he said

Chairperson Vaigankar alleged that garbage is being disposed of by people of the neighbouring panchayat areas but city dwellers hold municipalities responsible for not picking up garbage adding, that Despite cleaning waste regularly, still they had to face criticism and so they had initiated the drive.
