The issue of the diversion of the Mahadei river water dominated the Verla Canca gram sabha on Sunday with the villagers demanding to pass a resolution and to notify the Mahadei wild life sanctuary as tiger reserve. other civic issues plaguing the village were also raised at the gram sabha
With regards to tenant verification the villagers pointed out that the police inspector was informed to conduct an inspection and survey of the tenants and wanted to know the status; the secretary informed the villagers that there was no update from the pi the villagers questioned if the panchayat had done any follow up for and the secretary denied and the villagers got agitated after heated debates the villagers informed the sarpanch to send a reminder that the sp north also to be informed. On the issue of the Mahadei water diversion the villagers demanded to pass a resolution and to notify that mhadei wild life sanctuary as tiger reserve the villagers demanded that the issue regarding the mhadei river be placed for discussion in the gram sabha and it resolved to withdraw the permission given by the central government to the karnataka’s detail project report (dpr) for their kalasa bhandura project on river mhadei and as the incidental water diversion to other basins to the state of karnataka will not help to protect natural justice. it was also unanimously resolved to demand with the Goa government urgently notify mhadei wildlife sanctuary as tiger reserve. Local lincoln Braganza proposed to involve the residents of verla canca, bardez goa by signing an appeal and joining this movement at panchayat level in all wards.. the locals demanded that this resolution shall be submitted to the chief minister- forest department, water resources department, department of environment & climate change, mhadei bachao abhiyan convenor – mrs. nirmala sawant, aami goenkar, save mhadei save goa front, and the mla of siolim constituency.
villagers also raised the issue about the rural infra panchayat scheme the villagers pointed out that during the last gram sabh , the sarpanch/secretary informed that they would give a detailed report of this scheme as they were not aware. however, the sarpanch informed that the panchayat is coming with a community hall and they have obtained funds for this project from this scheme and that the scheme is now changed to den dayal scheme. the villagers also sought to know about the multi-dwelling projects and wanted to know if any new licences are issued, sarpanch said that there was one case which has been rejected, and villagers requested the sarpanch to inform the chief town planner and the directorate of panchayats .
the villagers also raised this issue about the garbage which is being stilled dumped along the verla- canca-khorlim road. Sarpanch said that the same is disposed of by lighting a fire. it was finally decided that the panchayat should file an FIR against unknown persons for this illegality. the chairman of the biodiversity management committee of verla canca village, was also urged to take necessary action.
Another issue which came up was the release of soiled/filthy water into storm water drains the locals demanded that provide details as to what steps have been taken. Locals also raised the issuye of illegal construction and landfilling in paddy fields and demanded that the panchayat along with the respective communidade survey and inspect the same and to also kindly provide the report of the same.
Another issue raised was about the planning for sewerages network connectivity the villagers said that this is a very important and urgent issue that has to be tackled. The villagers pointed out that in mind the rapid, fast, and haphazard development of our village as there is at present an acute shortage of drinking water. villagers requested the panchayat and the respective members to kindly look into this and take serious thought on the same. As unscrupulous tapping of groundwater for commercial usage was going on in the open thus resulting in the drying up of wells of residents and villagers.
