Within 24 hrs of Cong complaint, PWD moves to rectify road defects in South Goa

Panaji: After members of the Goa Congress Youth Committee highlighted various defects along roads in South Goa, officials of the public works department (PWD) took up repair works of some hazardous stretches within 24 hours of the complaint.

State vice-president of Youth Congress Vaishnav Pednekar and South Goa District President- Mahesh Nadar commended PWD’s efforts to address the concerns that they had raised on Monday.

“We thank them for taking up the issues that we had raised and addressing these concerns within 24 hours on the same day. However, a lot more remains to be done. These roads still need to be done Many roads and other related issues in South Goa need to be addressed. Some of these roads are now motorable. The road outside Kadamba bus stand has been partly addressed but hss not yet been tarred and made motorable. The official concerned has sought time to take up tarring works. Also, the stretch at Power House has been temporarily addressed, and the official has assured to finish the entire work by March-end. Also, safety tape has been placed on the stretch outside Chowgule college. Both, the South Goa district president – Mahesh Nadar and State Vice President – Vaishnav Pednekar continuously followed up and went there at night and overlooked the work,” Nadar said.

On Monday, the Goa Congress Youth Committee had accused the state administration of criminally neglecting safety and well-being of the people of the state.

They had submitted a memorandum at PWD Margao pointing out that a large number of lives are lost due to increasing number of road accidents. Nadar had blamed the government for failing to put in place adequate measures to ensure traffic can move smoothly and in a safe manner.

The youth Congress members had highlighted several dangerous spots, including the road in front of the Margao Bus Stand which is being dug up, while the Power House to Arlem highway is riddled with potential hazards for motorists, and the Borda St Joaquim Chapel road needs additional speed breakers to curb speeding in view of the number of hospitals in the vicinity. They also pointed out the dangers of the road at Chowgule College which is dug up and lacks safety measures like barricades, cautionary signs, etc.

The stretch of highway in front of the District Hospital at the entrance of the city where digging has been taken up is also an accident-prone zone, they had stated in the memorandum.
