Surya Mahadev Vengurlekar a 99 yr old Organic Farmer is an inspiration to Goan youths who think there is no money in farming.
Vengurlekar has taken up farming at the age of 15 years as his only profession and whole-heartedly immersed into it.. Initially, he started with a small plot of coconut and areca palms. He slowly but steadily expanded his farm, and now, he has around five fields of 2 acres ie 8,000 sq mtrs, where he has grown coconut trees, watermelons, sweet corn , sweet potatoes areca, cashews , bengali Brinjals and pepper vines etc.
Plantation also yields 450 kilos of pepper a year and 7,000 bananas. he also does organic farming of pulses, millets, and vegetables in her 2.5-acre field and also ragi and rice with chillies and onions.
“I did everything on my own, with my own will. And today look at me, I have my grand children helping me and I am thankful to God that my health is good” said vengurlekar
For the last many years vengurlekar has been consistent at his job, showing up every day irrespective of the weather, and has grown into a success story, with the support of his two grandsons and family.
Speaking further he says that he never had anyone to guide him personally, and had to take the initiative to educate himself.
I eat from the produce which I grow and have ever taken any medicines. I have never fallen sick and am always healthy.
