Calangute sarpanch Joseph sequeira has alleged that the existing sewerage treatment plant at calangute is a big scam as the sewerage treatment plant at Baga is operating without consent to operate and had failed to obtain occupancy certificate .
An inspection of the same was carried out by the panchayat and the The panchayat have stopped operations after it was noticed that ‘reverse pipeline’, which was laid to take clean water from the sewerage treatment plant (STP) at Baga,was discharging the water into a rivulet
the foundation stone for which had been laid by then chief minister Manohar Parrikar, had started in March 2013 and the entire network including the sewerage pipeline, STP and pumping stations was to be completed in three years, in 2016. The sewerage pipeline network had been constructed in Calangute and the sewage treatment plant has also been set up. However, the work had remained pending only because of issues of setting up of a pumping station in one of the wards.
“The contract to lay a sewerage line in Mapusa and along the Calangute-Baga coastal belt was awarded to Simplex Infrastructures Ltd at a cost of Rs 152.72 crore and work on the project had begun in 2013 and this is only a multi crore scam as it is operating without consent to operate” alleged calangute sarpanch Joseph sequeira
we are not going to tolerate nuisance in our villag this is absolutely wrong and strict will be taken against this kind of an act as illegal diversion of residential sewage water into the rivulet from the STP is going to pose a serious health hazard said” a panch member
Con: a few locals had expressed concerns about setting up of the STP the state government had decided to go ahead with its construction.
the sewerage system had come as a big relief to the large number of resorts and tourism-related establishments in Calangute that currently had to rely on soak pits and sewage suction tankers but during the inspection it was noticed that the same STP was simply releasing the same r sewage into the Baga creek posing a health hazard.
