Prashasan Stambh a vanity project, Goa administration needs real reform

PANAJI: South Goa District Youth Congress president Mahesh Nadar on Wednesday hit out at Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for the planned “Prashasan Stambh” project.

Alleging that the dream “Prashasan Stambh” project was solely a vanity project, Nadar accused the government of ignoring real day-to-day governance and administration issues of the state.

“Sawant seems to be learning from his master, Prime Minister Narendra Modi who made a whole song and dance about inaugurating the new Parliament building while at the same time murdering democracy in broad daylight.

“Similarly, Sawant wants to build large fancy structures in the hope that they will make up for his lack of ability to govern the state. While Sawant is setting aside 100s of crores for what he said will be the tallest building in Goa, his administration cannot even guarantee the three free cylinders that the party had promised ahead of the elections,” Nadar said.

The government is only focused on building new structures but existing infrastructure is crumbling. A case in point is the flooding of the Margao Municipal Building on Thursday.

It is a similar story in other towns of Goa like Vasco and Curchorem that are suffering from neglect and apathy, but the government is blind to it and only concerned with vanity projects.

Nadar also pointed out that the health and education sectors are dying for an infusion of funds but there was none forthcoming.

“The state doesn’t have money to invest in basic services such as healthcare, where infrastructure is crumbling and the education sector in the state is suffering from lack of teachers but is only focused on spending the money on pouring concrete into the ground, which is unsurprising because this is where they get the biggest kickbacks,” he said.

“Sawant seems to have forgotten that good government does not come from buildings but from an effective executive to push the right ideas to the people. Both of these are sorely lacking in the state at the moment and with those at the top clueless about how to remedy the situation, it is the common man who has to suffer.

“What the Chief minister needs to instead do is provide an effective administration that is caught up in the infighting between Ministers, among themselves as well as having a field day due to lack of proper oversight from the top.

Without this no matter what Sawant physically builds, it will only be an empty structure that enriches the politician and bureaucrat while impoverishing the state and the common man,” he said.
