Goan squad of 13 athletes and ten officials all set to depart for 2023 Berlin Special Olympics World Summer Games

Sports Minister Govind Gaude was at hand to personally attend and
wish the 23-member squad from Goa headed for the 2023 Special Olympics World
Summer Games in Germany. The Sports Minister Govind Gaude met up with members of the squad along with several media personnel at a special meet and greet press briefing that was held at the Sanjay Centre for Special Education, Porvorim, on Friday.
Nearly all of the 23 members from the Goa squad were in attendance at the
Manohar Parrikar Memorial Hall of Sanjay Centre for Special Education in
Porvorim. Joining the Goa Sports Minister was an array of distinguished guests, including
Subhash Phal Dessai, Minister of Social Welfare, Guruprasad Pawaskar, State
Commissioner for PWD, Siddharth Kunkolinkar, Chairman of Sanjay Centre for
Special Education, Taha I. Haaziq, Secretary, Office of the Commission for Person
with Disabilities and Victor R. Vaz, National Sports Director of Special Olympics
Bharat, and the entire executive team of special Olympics Bharat Goa – John De
Mello – President , Luis Fernandes – Vice President , Ms. Vrushali Cardozo – Area
Director and Marcus Cardozo .
The Goa squad comprising of 13 athletes participating in various sports disciplines,
will depart on June 7 for New Delhi to join up with Team India before setting out
for the 2023 Special Olympics World Summer Games scheduled to be held in
Berlin from June 17-25.
Accompanying the 13 athletes from Goa will be ten coaches and other support
staff. The athletes from Goa have been training in four batches for the past few
weeks in Panjim, Margao, Curchorem and Mapusa in an attempt to circumvent
logistics and travel issues.
The Goan athletes in Team India will be involved in Futsal (male), Athletics (male
and female), Roller Skating (Female), Basketball (male and female), Judo (male
and female), unified Volleyball (male and female) and Handball.
Victor R. Vaz, National Sports Director of Special Olympics Bharat, who will be
one of the Volunteer officials at the 2023 Special Olympics World Summer will be
leaving to Berlin earlier, was confident of team members faring well during the
two weeks of competition.
