People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has engaged in a twitter battle  with Amul  for disingenuously using tennis champion Novak Djokovic’s likeness in an ad, despite PETA India having informed the company he does not consume dairy.

“Amul’s use of Djokovic’s likeness showing butter on his fingers knowing full well he does not consume dairy is outright misleading,” says PETA India Manager of Vegan Projects Dr Kiran Ahuja. “If Amul has any integrity, they will take the ad down and let people know that Novak Djokovic is plant-based (vegan) for health.”

A Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine study published in the journal nutrients  found that vegan athletes benefit from improvements in heart health, performance, and recovery. Other people are vegan for the environment. The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) revealed that meat, egg, and dairy production is responsible for about 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which, by some estimates, is greater than all the world’s transportation systems combined. Many people turn to vegan foods because they object to the common abandonment or killing of male calves and the supply of cattle to the beef and leather industries by the dairy sector.

Novak Djokovic recently won a men’s record 23rd Grand Slam title with victory over Norway’s Casper Ruud in the French Open final.
