The continuous heavy rains have disrupted normal life in Mapusa and surrounding areas. Due to heavy rains a laterite stone built compound wall of a Mapusa school at Dattawadi in Mapusa collapsed on Thursday evening. Luckily no one was injured in the incident.

The portion of the same wall collapsed last year wherein one person was injured, however it has been almost one year no repair work has been undertaken.

According to information available, an incident took place on Thursday evening when a portion of the compound wall built of laterite stones came crashing down, as a result power cables snapped. On receipt of information, Mapusa Municipal Council chairperson Priya Mishal who is also a local councillor along with the vice chairperson Viraj Phadke rushed to the spot.

The chairperson of MMC Priya Mishal said that last year a part of the compound wall had collapsed and the wall was in dangerous condition. Even MMC had issued a notice to the committee to repair the compound wall but it was not done.

“Through the local MLA I got to know that the work to repair the compound wall is proposed under the MLALAD scheme and work has been tendered “said Mishal.

She further said that MMC will clear the debris and have asked the Fire department to cut the coconut tree as it is in a dangerous condition and can uproot at any time.
