Doctors at Manipal Hospital, Goa perform first laparoscopic liver resection surgery

Goa, November 28, 2023: Manipal Hospitals, the second-largest healthcare service provider, has set another benchmark for the people of Goa. Doctors at Manipal Hospital, Goa have successfully performed Goa’s first Laparoscopic liver resection surgery.

A 31-year-old female patient came to Manipal Hospital with an incidentally found liver tumor. Scans and tests showed a 5.4 cm tumor in the left lobe of the liver. Although she didn’t have any symptoms, surgery was planned because of the size of the tumor to avoid future complications like rupture and bleeding. As a young woman, there were concerns regarding the big scars that usually come with open liver surgeries.

The doctors decided to proceed with laparoscopic liver surgery, which was successfully completed in two hours with very minimal blood loss, and the tumor was completely removed. The patient was able to move around after 6 hours and was discharged after 4 days. On one-month follow-up, the patient was doing well and was able to do all her regular activities without any problem. This is the first time a laparoscopic liver resection surgery has been successfully performed in a hospital in Goa.

The operating surgeons, Dr. Sredharan M, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, and Dr. Afzal Siddiqui, Consultant Laparoscopic and Robotic Gynaecological Surgeon, Manipal Hospital, Goa said, “Laparoscopic hepatectomy surgeries are highly advanced laparoscopic surgeries that need coordinated teamwork between an anaesthetist, medical gastroenterologist, ICU team, and the physicians. Well-trained operation theatre staff are required to successfully perform these major surgeries. All advanced cancer surgeries such as colon, rectum, esophagus, stomach, lung, and liver are being done through laparoscopy at Manipal Hospital, Goa.”

Dr. Yogesh Gaude, Anaesthetist, Manipal Hospital, Goa said, “The post-operative painkiller requirements in these patients are much less because of the small buttonhole size cuts. When done in selected patients, the outcomes are extremely good with less blood loss, early recovery, and resumption of daily activities.”

Commenting on the success of the surgery, Mr. Surendra Prasad, Hospital Director, Manipal Hospital, Goa, said, “I congratulate the team of Operating Surgeons Dr. Sredharan M, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, and Dr. Afzal Siddiqui, Consultant Laparoscopic and Robotic Gynaecological Surgeon, and Anesthetist Dr. Yogesh Gaude for the intricate diagnosis and treatment provided, thus giving a better quality of life to the patient. Manipal Hospitals, Goa, has an expert panel of highly qualified full-time super-specialty consultants who often work

together on complex cases with a very scientific and disciplined approach. The patient has benefited immensely from the well-coordinated, multi-disciplinary approach, and the excellent support provided by our well-trained nursing staff and clinical assistants.”
