A committee of Mapusa Traders Association led by President Shripad Sawant recently met Deputy Chairman Joshua D’Souza and submitted a written statement regarding the fare hike. Secretary Mahesh Sawant, Vallabh Mishal, Jitesh Dangi were present on this occasion. Deputy speaker Joshua D’Souza has assured the traders association that a joint meeting of Mapusa Municipal Board and Mapusa Trade Association will be held on Friday, January 12 morning.
The Mapusa Traders Association strongly opposed the increase in lease rates and met the chairperson Priya Mishal and demanded to withdraw the increase in rent rates. The Mapusa Traders Association had given eight days to the Mapusa Municipal council to withdraw the rent hike. He had warned to close Mapusa market and Mapusa city if the fare hike was not withdrawn.Municipal President Priya Mishal said that the decision to increase the rent band has been taken in the municipal board meeting. Municipal President Priya Mishal assured the business association that a special meeting of the Municipal Board will be held and a final decision will be taken.

According to the Municipal Act, it is mandatory that the resolution cannot be withdrawn before three months after passing any resolution. After three months, a decision will be taken by taking a meeting of the municipal board.
In the Mapusa Municipal Board meeting held on December 29, a resolution was passed to increase the lease rate. According to the new lease rate increase, Rs. 296. The increase in price per square meter was approved by the Municipal Board. Therefore, the price was almost doubled. The lease rate is increased every ten years by the Public Works Department. Implementation of the lease rate depends on the approval of the Municipal Board. It is mandatory to levy this increased rate only if the Urban Development Department directs the government. Everyone’s attention is on what decision the Mapusa Municipal Board will take about the lease.
