Villagers of Anjuna Caiusa on Monday staged a spontaneous protest by shutting down all the establishments in protest against the initiation of the process after the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court directed the sealing of 175 establishments in the Anjuna Vagator coastal area. A protest meeting was organized for this purpose at Anjuna Starco Junction.
After submitting all kinds of documents in the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court, the court has ordered the sealing of 175 constructions which have been declared illegal. According to the court order to submit the report of this action within ten days, Bardez Group Development Officer, Extension Officer and Panchayat Secretary of Anjuna Panchayat started this action, some locals tried to oppose it. It was also directed to verify through documents whether the said establishments are really old or not after the sealing process.
In order to protest this process and to find a permanent solution, the local citizens of this place held a protest meeting in the panchayat premises to support the owners of these 175 establishments.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo guided the meeting. Speaking on the occasion, he said that not only here but in the entire coastal areas of Goa, locals have houses and some have businesses since before the CRZ Act came into existence. At that time, these locals had started business with panchayat and excise account and other similar licenses. Despite submission of all kinds of documents, due to Public Interest Litigation, the court declared the constructions illegal. We have nothing to say against the court and cannot go against it, the court is doing its job. We are negotiating with the Chief Minister to find a suitable solution. We will take a delegation of ten to twelve people from the coastal area. The authorities do not know which documents are required to determine whether these establishments in the coastal areas are legal or illegal, so they will suggest re-verification by talking to the Chief Minister and the state government needs to issue a notification on all these processes. Speaking on this occasion, MLA Michael Lobo said that he will meet the Chief Minister tomorrow to discuss this issue.
MLA Lobo also said that there is a need to change the CRZ Act to save the establishments and residential houses in the coastal areas of Goa. If CRZ 3 is changed from CRZ 2 to CRZ 2 i.e. urban areas, all the establishments will be protected.
