Faldessai assures to begin Vanxim bridge work in Jan

Panaji: Chairman of Goa Rehabilitation Board and Cumbarjua MLA Rajesh Faldessai said that he will ensure that a new bridge connecting Vanxim island to Divar island will be built during his current tenure.

He was speaking after inaugurating Ganesh Visarjan Sheds at Vanxim and Vanjua Malar Divar on Sunday.

Both the sheds have been generously constructed by the MLA using his personal funds.

Those present were Sarpanch Supriya Tari, Deputy Sarpanch Rupesh Homkhandi, panch members Anuradha Volvoikar, Shabdesh Mandrekar, and Marina Vaz.

Stating he had a target of fulfilling all proposals for Ganesh Chaturthi, Faldessai said that another four sheds are being built at Cumbarjua, as well as at Karmali.

Speaking at Vanjua Malar Divar, Faldessai said that the shed was a longstanding demand of the locals. The MLA also said that he is pursuing other proposals under the MLA funds, but it will take a few months to be approved.

“People used to hurry up with the visarjans as there was no shed during heavy rains. Now they can celebrate without any worry. I feel happy that before I was elected MLA, Rupesh and his team would tell me about the need to build this shed. However, due to some problems building the shed in the water, it could not be taken up. However, the good contractor Sunil Bhomkar has built a retaining wall along the field. He also charged me a discount on the work. This dream of Rupesh and his villagers has been finally fulfilled,” he said.

Speaking at Vanxim, the MLA said that there are proposals to build another 15 sheds. Stating that he is not doing these works for votes, Faldessai said that he spent around Rs 25 lakhs due to additional work, and assured that granite and pavers will be also placed in the next 2 months.

“There is also a proposal for a bridge here and the CM had announced this during the Bonderam festival. I had told CM that this is an urgent requirement because for Vanxim residents, even if they need a packet of milk they have to go to Divar. It is affecting the education of students as well as during health emergencies as ferries are late. I have been trying to get this bridge for a long time. I assure that during this term this bridge will be built. CM has also given me an assurance. We are trying to lay the foundation stone by January next year through GSIDC,”he said.

“The bridge will solve many problems faced by the locals. Also, we are planning to build two ramps for ferries at Old Goa and Divar to cater to the rush during festivals. In every assembly session, I always raise the issues of Vanxim villagers. As far as the water problem is concerned, laying of a new pipeline worth Rs 16 crore will be taken up. It has been passed. Underground power cabling will also be taken up,” he added.
