Brewing Microplastics: DMC College, Lions club & Mapusa Municipal Council Join hands to ditch paper cups for Hot Beverages, Awareness campaign against use of paper cups for hot beverages has been launched on 5th September 2024, Teachers Day. Event was hosted by Mapusa Municipal Council in association with DMC college and Lions Club of Mapusa at Mapusa Municipal Council. Co-ordinator of the campaign, Dr, Rajesh Pednekar, Highlighted the dangers of the use of paper cups for hot beverages due to leaching of Microplastics at higher temperature. He quoted the IIT Kharagpur study by Dr. Sudha Goel , which says A person drinking 3 cups of tea in disposal paper cups will end up ingesting 75,000 tiny Microplastics particles. Ingesting Microplastics has dangerous side effects as Chemicals used are Carcinogenic, Hormonal imbalances, gut problems and related health issues. Chairperson Mrs. Dr. Nutan Bicholkar expressed her views and assured all her support for the success of the campaign to fight against Microplastics. MJF Lion Shreedhar Naik President of Lions Club of Mapuca in his address shared his concern for this most neglected problem and assured the commitment of Lions club to take this mission across Goa. Eradication of harmful micro plastic polymer is need of the hour and whole heartedly supported by Lions to maintain healthy lifestyle and environment protection. Principal of DMC
College Prof. Dilip Arolkar highlighted the various green initiatives of the college linking education to the needs of community problems with the help of 2000 students and dedicated faculty members, he also highlighted the Increasing cases of cancer patients across India as a major cause of concern and linked the campaign for Indian commitment for UN sustainable Development Goal 3 , promoting Good Health and Well Being. Vice chairman of MMC proposed vote of thanks to all supporters and attendees. Dr. Umesh Gawas, Co-ordinator for Institutional Innovation Council, Dr. Prabhat Desai, Co-ordinator of M.Sc., Dr. Abhijit Shetgaonkar, Dr. Sudesh Morajkar , Faculty members and Dr. (Lieutenant) Sandesh Naik , NCC were also present during the launch of the year-long campaign to fight Microplastics.
