Ferreira takes up long pending work of desilting visarjan site at Nachinola
PANAJI: Considering the long pending demands of locals, Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira took the initiative to desilt the visarjan site on the border of Nachinola and Uccasiam.
Around 100m of the water body was taken up for desilting. This has ensured a smoother water flow after a lot of waste and debris was cleared from the area, he said.
“The area was filled with waste. For so many years, such work was not taken up using heavy machinery. We tried to deploy an excavator some days back, but we were not entirely successful in clearing the waste. We could only clean the water channel. As the excavator could not move down into the water body, we got an amphibious machine. I thank WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar, Chief Engineer Badami, engineers, and other officials. I also thank Nachinola Sarpanch Freddy Fernandes for pursuing the matter,” he said.
“I urge people not to throw anything into the water body. It is our environment. Keep our water bodies and streams clean,” he added.
Fernandes thanked the MLA for taking up the demand which was pending for nearly 15 years.
“It was a pending demand by farmers and people who would immerse Ganesh idols in the lake. The flow of water was hindered. We had also demanded desilting and building of a retaining wall. The MLA has drafted an estimate, and we will get the NOC from the farmers for this work. I urge people not to indulge in anti-social activities at the visarjan site,” he said.
Deputy Sarpanch Sanjivini Khalap said, “I request our local people, especially the youth, to desist from consuming alcohol here and throwing bottles in the water body. Devotees face a lot of trouble annually while immersing Ganesh idols. The youth who descend into the lake end up injuring their feet due to bottle shards,” she said.
Ferreira also thanked Ucassaim panch Gauravi Madgaokar, Ashok Vainganker, Bhanudas Kerkar, Ravi Mavalankar, Rocque Fernandes, Sudesh Khalap for being present despite the incessant showers.
He also thanked EE Milind, AE Vinoo, JE Reshma and Avinash Ajgaonkar and other staff of WRD for their support and quick response that enabled him to attend to this demand pending for 10-15 years as mentioned by Fernandes.
