TOURIST TOUTS RUN AMOK IN PANAJI
Panaji, Goa – Despite government efforts to promote tourism, the city is plagued by rampant touting, leaving visitors with a sour experience.
Touts, mostly migrants from neighboring states, have taken over key locations, including Mandovi Bridge, Multi-level parking lot, Kadamba Bus Terminus, and tourist hotspots. They aggressively solicit business, often using dirty tricks, misinformation, and intimidation.
These self-proclaimed “agents” have formed a nexus with hoteliers, lodge owners, restaurant owners, liquor shops, cashew nut vendors, taxi drivers, and rickshaw pullers, earning hefty commissions.
Their modus operandi includes stopping vehicles mid-road, causing traffic congestion and jams, especially during peak hours. Visitors, often couples on honeymoon, are misled and fleeced, with some even falling victim to loot.
The touts’ unscrupulous activities have tarnished Goa’s reputation, with tourists blaming locals for their negative experiences.
Concerned citizens and tourism stakeholders urge authorities to crack down on these touts, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors.
Locations frequented by touts include Mandovi Bridge slope near Betim junction, Multi-level parking lot, Kadamba Bus Terminus, Santa Monica jetty, Tourism Jetty, Cardozo building, Mermaid garden, Abbe Faria statue, Adil Shah palace, and Customs House. Authorities must take immediate action to regulate touting activities, protect tourists, and preserve Goa’s reputation as a premier tourist destination.
