MCL 10 Opener: Rain Forces Abandonment of Royals vs Knights Clash
Margao – The much-anticipated opening match of the 10th season of the MCC Members Cricket League (MCL) T20 between MCC Royals and MCC Knights was brought to an unfortunate halt due to rain. The match, held at the MCC grounds, Margao ended without a result as persistent showers disrupted play.
MCC Royals, after winning the toss, elected to bat first and posted a competitive total of 145/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Shailesh Redkar was the top scorer for the Royals, delivering an aggressive 36 runs off just 21 balls, punctuated by 5 boundaries and a six. Rueben Kareker also played a key role, contributing 35 runs from 29 balls and hitting 3 fours, sharing an important 58-run partnership for the third wicket. Opener Rizwan Kazi added a steady 30 runs from 30 deliveries. The Knights’ bowlers kept the Royals in check, with Venkat Biche, Neelam Korgaokar, Venkatesh Nevagi, Rohit Mehta, and Dinesh Pai each claiming a wicket.
In response, MCC Knights reached 72/2 in 11 overs before rain forced the players off the field. Venkatesh Nevgi led the scoring for the Knights with an impressive 31 runs off 19 balls, which included 4 boundaries and a six. Shailesh Redkar showcased his all-round capabilities by taking both wickets for the Royals. However, persistent rain prevented any further play, and the match was declared abandoned.
The day began with a grand inauguration to commemorate the 10th season of the MCL, attended by esteemed guests and dignitaries. Dr. Sagar Salgaocar, Managing Director of Geno Pharmaceuticals, and Sunil Sikand, son of the legendary Bollywood actor Pran, graced the event. Chirag Naik and Venkat Dessai presented bouquets to Dr. Salgaocar and Mr. Sikand, respectively.
During the ceremony, Dr. Salgaocar lauded the progress and competitive spirit of the MCL, saying, “MCL has grown from strength to strength. As a player, I have experienced its competitiveness.” He also commended the MCC Executive Committee for their dedication in installing floodlights, a significant enhancement for the tournament’s future.
The 10th season’s celebrations also featured the introduction of special commemorative coins, adding a distinctive touch to the occasion. Players from both teams were introduced to the dignitaries, fostering a spirit of unity and sportsmanship before the action commenced.
