GOA CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS WITH FAITH, FAMILY, AND FESTIVITY
Panaji/Mapusa: Goa was abuzz with Christmas celebrations, as people from all communities came together to mark the festive occasion. The state’s vibrant culture and rich heritage were on full display, with decorations, midnight Mass, caroling, and feasting.
Christmas, as we know it today, has its roots in ancient pagan festivals that celebrated the winter solstice. Early Christians, however, commemorated the birth of Jesus Christ, and over time, the holiday evolved into the festive celebration we know today. The early history of Christmas is not well documented, but it is believed that the holiday was first observed in the 4th century.
Midnight Mass is a popular tradition in Goa, with a number of churches across the state participating in the celebrations. The proceedings typically started at 10 pm, with peaceful hymns and carols filling the air. Attending Midnight Mass was a cherished experience, especially at iconic churches like the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Immaculate Conception Church and other churches across the state .
The festive atmosphere in Goa was electric, with parties, dances, and events taking place across the state. The Latin Quarters of Panjim were beautifully decorated, with festive lights and the scent of freshly baked Goan sweets filling the air.
Christmas in Goa was not just about celebrations, but also about giving. Village groups went around singing carols and collecting funds for the poor and orphans. The festive season was also a time for families to come together and strengthen bonds.
As Goa celebrated Christmas with enthusiasm and fervor, it was a reminder of the state’s rich cultural heritage and its people’s generosity and warmth.
