CALANGUTE CONSTITUENCY FORUM SLAMS GOVT OVER SINQUERIM HILL LEASE
Mapusa: The Calangute Constituency Forum is up in arms against the Goa government’s decision to lease Sinquerim Hill to the Indian Hotels Company Limited for commercial development. The forum accuses the government of prioritizing corporate interests over environmental and cultural concerns.
At the heart of the controversy is a lease agreement worth Rs 62.25 crore, which has been criticized for its lack of transparency and potential for environmental degradation. Locals fear that the development will destroy the hill’s ecosystem, home to several endangered species, and erase the area’s rich cultural heritage.
Premanand Divkar, president of the forum, condemned the government’s decision, stating that it’s a clear case of selling out to corporate interests.
Another member Agnelo Barretto, demanded that the government come clean about the lease agreement and prioritize the interests of the local community.
The forum has threatened to launch a movement, “Save Sinquerim Hill for Next Generation,” with support from the people of Calangute constituency and the state of Goa.
To further discuss the issue and plan their next course of action, the Calangute Constituency Forum will hold another meeting on February 5th. All concerned citizens are invited to attend and join the fight to save Sinquerim Hill at 5.30 at candolim church hall .
Villagers are demanding that the government:
1. Reconsider the lease and protect Sinquerim Hill.
2. Uphold the original land acquisition terms, preventing commercial activities.
3. Develop a world-class botanical garden as an eco-friendly alternative.
4. Preserve the land for future generations without rezoning or conversion.
