Dr. Nutan Bicholkar, Chairperson of the Mapusa Municipal Council, has tendered her resignation in a significant development. While addressing the media, Dr. Bicholkar revealed that her resignation was a result of a mutual understanding between the ruling councilors and showed her resignation letter to the media.
Dr. Bicholkar stated that for the last three months, her colleagues were not cooperating with her during meetings and serious discussions. Despite being the chairperson, her work was not being done, and she felt that her presence was pointless, leading to suffering for the people.
This decision marks the end of Dr. Bicholkar’s tenure as Chairperson, during which she oversaw various initiatives and projects aimed at developing the Mapusa Municipal area. She mentioned that during her tenure, she accomplished several developmental works, including:
– Sopo tender and pay parking: Generating revenue for the MMC
– Pre-monsoon works: Addressing market flooding, garbage issues, toilet cleanliness, and more
– Infrastructure development: Introducing a hearse van, JCB, and other essential services
However, some projects, such as resolving traffic congestion and accident-prone areas, are still pending.
Dr. Bicholkar emphasized, “One needs support, cooperation, and coordination from colleagues to ascertain the power being in the chair.”
With her resignation, Dr. Bicholkar will likely succeed former Chairperson Ms. Priya Mishal. The Mapusa Municipal Council has 10 days to decide on the issue, and her tenure will officially end on February 23. The council will then need to convene a meeting to elect a new Chairperson.
The Mapusa Municipal Council is responsible for providing various civic amenities and services to the residents of Mapusa, including water supply, sanitation, and infrastructure development. The council’s activities are overseen by the North Goa District administration ¹.
