Har Ghar Nal… Where is the Jal: Adv Carlos Demands to Know
PANAJI: Aldona Congress MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira on Monday hit out at the government for mindlessly approving mega projects with swimming pools in areas facing water shortage and scarcity. He lamented that people in his constituency are not receiving water supply for even 15 minutes a day.
“New developments are being permitted, with permissions given for bungalows with swimming pools. We have great objections to these swimming pools coming up,” Adv Carlos said. “They’re saying, ‘you make arrangements for your own water,’ but they’re actually using PWD as a water source. How are you controlling that?”
He questioned the government’s claim that all areas of Goa have potable water supply, citing the lack of water supply in many areas. Adv Carlos also highlighted the issue of new housing complexes using PWD water sources, leaving locals without access to water.
“The housing complexes have sumps. The water flows into the sump and then they pump it to the overhead tanks, the swimming pools, and our people do not get water,” he said. “We are the original Goans, but the new colonies are getting uninterrupted water supply 24*7.”
Adv Carlos demanded that the government take immediate action to address the water shortage issue and ensure that locals have access to basic amenities like water. He also raised concerns about the lack of staff to rectify PWD issues and called on the government to have a team of plumbers, valve operators, supervisors, and helpers, as well as replace old pipelines.
“The gram sabhas have taken resolutions about these multi-complexes with swimming pools. I think the government needs to wake up to this situation and take it very seriously,” Adv Carlos added.
