MANGO MANIA HITS GOA: PRICES SKYROCKET AS FIRST CROP ARRIVES

PANAJI: With the arrival of March, mangoes have started flooding the markets in Goa. However, their prices are skyrocketing. Mangoes from Karnataka, Maharashtra, and other states, along with local produce, are available in the fruit markets.

In Panaji, various types of mangoes can be found, including local varieties like Malkurad or Mankurad, Alfonso from Ratnagiri, Totapuri from Karnataka, and Sinder from Maharashtra. According to a fruit vendor, mangoes from Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh will soon arrive in the market, leading to a decrease in prices.

While mangoes from other states are sold by weight, local produce is sold by the dozen. The price range for Mankurad or Malkurad mangoes varies from Rs 1,200 to Rs 3,500 per dozen, depending on the quality. Alfonso mangoes are priced at Rs 800 per dozen, and Sinder mangoes cost Rs 250 per kilogram.

When asked about the high prices of Mankurad mangoes, the fruit vendor explained that the “first crop” is always costly. She revealed that wealthy customers in Goa are willing to pay a premium for the first crop, citing an instance where a dozen Mankurad mangoes were sold for Rs 5,000.

Regarding concerns about potential losses due to rotten mangoes, the vendor stated that they buy and sell mangoes at high prices, but their profits are minimal. She emphasized that losses and profits are inherent in any business.
