MOG Founder Subodh Kerkar to Recount Goa’s Known and Untold Histories at Kala Academy Lecture
Panaji, April 2025 – Renowned artist Dr. Subodh Kerkar will deliver a lecture titled ‘Glimpses of Goa’s Histories’ at Kala Academy in Panaji on April 5. Organized by the Museum of Goa, the lecture aims to transcend the typical tourist perspective on Goa, exploring aspects beyond its beaches, nightlife, restaurants, and nostalgia.
Through the lens of an artist, Kerkar will examine multiple dimensions of Goa’s history, encompassing architecture, diaspora, local cuisine, and colonial legacy. “Glimpses of Goa’s Histories will offer facets of Goa’s past that lie beyond the realm of popular memory. Through the lens of an artist and an avid reader of history, I will discuss stories of Goa, from its architecture and food to its culture and diaspora and the important role it plays in India’s history,” Kerkar said.
The lecture presents an opportunity for listeners to discuss the stories of Goa, its people, its identity, and its culture. As the founder of the Museum of Goa in Pilerne and a distinguished Goa-based artist, Kerkar will share his expertise and recount captivating stories based on his personal experiences and observations during the lecture.
The event will also serve as the launch platform for ‘Goa: Subodh Kerkar’s Canvas,’ a book authored by Kunal Ray, which encapsulates the essence of Kerkar’s artistic endeavors, including his sand installations and terracotta sculptures, while highlighting the intersections between his art, history, identity, and resistance.
“Subodh Kerkar’s canvas of Goa combines the state’s people, its waters, and their intertwined history in a visual tour de force. From resplendent paintings of Goan houses to larger-than-life beach installations, Subodh’s artwork exists at the confluence of aesthetics and social consciousness,” said Ray, who teaches literary and cultural studies at FLAME University, Pune.
Dr. Subodh Kerkar’s lecture, titled ‘Glimpses of Goa’s Histories,’ will be held at Kala Academy on April 5, 2025, at 4:00 PM.
