President Murmu’s Visit to Strengthen Friendship and Partnership with Portugal

Panaji,08th April, 2025 – President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, on Sunday night. Her visit is considered historic, as it marks the first visit by an Indian President to Portugal in 27 years. Additionally, India and Portugal are currently celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations, making this visit a significant step in deepening the friendship and partnership between the two countries.

During the visit, President Murmu will be accorded a Guard of Honour. She will hold several important meetings with Portugal’s top leadership, including President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, and Assembly Speaker Dr. José Pedro Aguiar-Branco. Later, the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Manuel Félix Moedas, will host a special event in her honor. She will also attend a banquet hosted by President de Sousa.

In a statement, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Shri Tanmay Lal, said, “Trade between India and Portugal stands at 1.5 billion US dollars and has seen a 50% increase over the past five years. We are witnessing expanding cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, IT, pharmaceuticals, education, tourism, and defense. Portugal has always played an important role in deepening the India-European Union partnership.”

During the visit, President Murmu will also interact with members of the Indian community, including researchers working at various Portuguese institutions. Before beginning the second leg of her trip to Slovakia on April 9th–10th, the President will also participate in a community reception.

India and Portugal share multidimensional ties rooted in history. With strengthened cooperation in political, economic, cultural, and technological fields, the relationship has taken on a modern dimension in recent times. Recently, India and Portugal have enhanced collaboration in areas such as trade and investment, science and technology, education, and culture. India’s growing economy presents opportunities for Portuguese businesses in sectors like infrastructure development, renewable energy, construction, and technology, while India’s expanding middle class also offers an attractive market for Portuguese goods and services. It is hoped that the President’s visit will further deepen the ties between the two nations.
