Fisheries Minister Shri Nilkant Halarnkar recently participated in the installation of Artificial Reefs along the coast of Goa at the Fisheries Ramp, Querim, Pernem. The event was attended by MLA Shri Jit Arolkar, panchayat members, Secretary Fisheries, and other dignitaries.

The installation of Artificial Reefs is a significant step towards promoting sustainable fisheries and enhancing the livelihoods of local fishermen in Goa. These reefs are designed to mimic natural habitats, promoting fish reproduction and enhancing marine biodiversity.

“The installation of Artificial Reefs is a game-changer for Goa’s fisheries sector. It will not only boost fish production but also provide a sustainable livelihood to our fishermen,” said Shri Nilkant Halarnkar, Fisheries Minister.

“The Artificial Reefs will help us promote eco-friendly fishing practices and reduce the impact of bottom trawling, ensuring a healthier marine ecosystem for future generations,” added Shri Halarnkar.

The Artificial Reefs can boost fish production by providing a conducive environment for fish to thrive, improving the livelihoods of local fishermen and contributing to the state’s economy. They can also help promote sustainable fisheries management by reducing the impact of bottom trawling and promoting eco-friendly fishing practices.

Goa has the potential to become a major hub for fisheries in the country, with the Union Government investing Rs 400 crore for the holistic development of the fisheries sector in the state. The installation of Artificial Reefs is a significant step towards realizing this potential.
