Mahila Congress Demands Action Against Doctor Accused in Rape Case
MARGAO: The Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress on Monday held a protest at Chinchinim demanding the immediate sealing and closure of the clinic belonging to Dr. Samuel Arawattigi, who has been arrested by Cuncolim Police in connection with a rape case. The accused is currently in 14-day judicial custody as per court orders.
Addressing the protest, Dr. Pratiksha Khalap, President of the Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress, strongly condemned the crime and demanded the immediate suspension of Dr. Arawattigi’s medical registration.
“This is a heinous act committed against a nurse working at his clinic. Although he is in custody now, there’s a risk of repeat offense if he is released. His license must be revoked, and the clinic permanently shut. Such crimes must not be tolerated. We will continue to raise our voice for justice for women,” Dr. Khalap asserted.
Mitchel Rebello, Zilla Panchayat Member, applauded the courage of the survivor in filing the complaint. “It takes immense strength to come forward. Doctors are seen as lifesavers, but in this case, the accused has stripped a woman of her dignity. We must stand with the survivor,” she said.
Manisha Usgaonkar, General Secretary of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, questioned the silence and inaction of the government on rising crimes against women.
“How many more women must suffer? Every other day, we hear of cases of rape, molestation, or murder. Why is the government turning a blind eye? The CM had promised strict action—where is it?” she said.
Savio D’Silva, President of South Goa District Congress Committee, reiterated the party’s support:
“The Goa Congress stands firmly with the survivor and will fight until she gets justice.”
The protest saw participation from several women leaders and citizens, united in demanding swift justice and stringent action against the accused.
