“Heavy Rains Bring Down Ancient Portuguese House in Sao Mathias Village”
A centuries-old Portuguese mud house in Sao Mathias Village panchayat, belonging to Ms. Nisha Menezes, collapsed due to heavy rainfall and gusty winds yesterday night. Fortunately, there were no casualties, as the house’s occupants were residing in Mumbai and only visit the property once a year for a month-long stay.
The house’s roof and mud walls caved in around 9:30 pm, blocking the pathway with rubble and mud. Although the local panchayat was informed about the incident by a cousin of the house’s occupants, no authorities from the panchayat visited the site. However, the Mamlatdar did inspect the damage and assessed the severity of the destruction.
The collapse of the ancient house resulted in significant property loss, but thankfully, no lives were lost. The incident highlights the vulnerability of old structures to extreme weather conditions.
