CALANGUTE ASSOCIATION THRASH SAO JOSE TO ENTER SEMI-FINALS OF CUSTODIO MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT
Margao:Calangute Association produced a stunning comeback to defeat Sao Jose de Areal 3-2 in the 52nd Custodio Memorial Football Tournament, organized by Raia Sporting Association at the Raia Panchayat ground. The match saw a dramatic turnaround, with Sao Jose de Areal dominating the first half but Calangute Association fighting back to win the game.
The match began with both teams creating scoring opportunities, but Sao Jose de Areal’s Mohammad Mansori’s long-ranger in the 4th minute and Calangute Association’s Sahil Shaikh’s shot in the 6th minute failed to find the target. Sao Jose de Areal took the lead in the 10th minute through Stalen Oliveira’s diagonal shot, and Ashnoy Gomes scored the second goal in the 29th minute, giving Sao Jose de Areal a 2-0 lead at halftime.
However, Calangute Association changed the tempo of the game in the second half, scoring three goals in quick succession. Ashwyn D’Souza scored the first goal in the 42nd minute, followed by Fasel D’Souza’s equalizer in the 46th minute. In a thrilling finale, Domnic Fernandes scored a stunning 30-yard shot in the last minute of the game, sealing the win for Calangute Association.
The victory marked a remarkable turnaround for Calangute Association, who were trailing 2-0 at halftime. The team’s determination and resilience paid off, as they fought back to win the match 3-2 and secure a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament.
