FC Goa Secure Borja Herrera for 2025-26 Campaign
Porovirm: FC Goa is delighted to announce that Spanish midfielder Borja Herrera has extended his contract with the club by one year, keeping him in orange till the end of the 2025-26 season. Since joining FC Goa, Borja has established himself as a vital cog in the team’s midfield, impressing with his vision, technical ability, and versatility. His composure on the ball and work ethic have made him a fan favourite and a key figure in the dressing room.
Speaking on the extension, Borja Herrera said, “I’m very happy to continue with the club because I’ve discovered the best version of myself here, thanks to the trust of the club, my teammates, the manager and the fans. I felt I had to stay for another year. I’d also like to play in the Asian competition, since last year, despite qualifying with East Bengal, I wasn’t able to play. I’m sure it will be a great year and we’ll all enjoy it”.
The 32-year-old will serve his second full year at the club this season, having first signed with FC Goa on a short-term loan in January 2024, and then playing the entirety of the 2024-25 season. In Herrera’s time with the club, he has made incredible strides, registering a total of 10 goal involvements in the Indian Super League last season, including a hat-trick against East Bengal, clinching the Gaurs their very first win of the season. His four goals in the Kalinga Super Cup, including the double in the final, taking FC Goa to the continental stage shows the quality he brings to the table.
“Borja’s commitment to the team both on and off the pitch has been exemplary. He’s someone who brings experience, intelligence, and an incredible level of professionalism to the squad. His ability to dictate the tempo of games, combined with his versatility to adapt to multiple roles, makes him an invaluable asset for us. Beyond his footballing ability, Borja has shown strong leadership and is someone the younger players in the squad look up to. Retaining him was a key part of our planning for the upcoming season, and we’re excited to see him continue to contribute to the Club’s ambitions as we strive to push for silverware.”
Borja Herrera shares a good relationship with Head Coach Manolo Marquez, having played under him at Hyderabad FC in the 2022-23 season, as well as spending time together in Spain playing for UD Las Palmas in the 2017-18 season. Previously Marquez has referred to him as someone who “knows the ISL perfectly and can play in different positions.” The coach places good trust in him, and once said his “statistics are always good.”
Borja’s extension reinforces FC Goa’s intent to build a competitive and cohesive unit for the challenges of the upcoming season.
