New Rehabilitation Centre Opens in Colvale to Combat Addiction
Mapusa: A new rehabilitation centre, the Hope Recovery Centre, was recently inaugurated in Colvale to provide support and recovery services to individuals struggling with substance dependence. The centre, run by the Claretians of the Province of Bangalore, aims to address the growing concern of addiction in Goa.
Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira described drug addiction as a growing concern, while Calangute MLA Michael Lobo warned that addiction can destabilise any household, regardless of background. Lobo also highlighted the severity of the issue, citing the seizure of drugs worth Rs 90-100 crore in 2024 and Rs 45 crore worth of drugs in the first five months of this year alone.
The Hope Recovery Centre, named in memory of the late Mathew Braganza, will provide integrated rehabilitation services to those battling addiction. The centre’s objective is to support individuals and families affected by addiction, providing a structured program for recovery.
The centre was inaugurated by Fr Sabu George Koottarappallil, CMF, Provincial Superior of the Bangalore Province of the Claretian Missionaries, with the blessing offered by Auxiliary Bishop of Goa and Daman Rev Simiao Purificacao Fernandes. Fernandes expressed his hope that the centre would benefit many who are struggling silently with addiction.
