“Snakes: Our Friends in Nature” – Shri Shanta Vidyalaya Celebrates Nag Panchami

On July 28, Shri Shanta Vidyalaya, run by Vidya Bharati, celebrated Nag Panchami. A snake show was organized for the students. The program began with lighting of lamps and worshipping of snakes.

The main attraction of the program was by  snake-charming  expert Shri. Sameer Syed, who informed the students about snakes. He explained the poisonous and non-poisonous varieties of snakes like Ghonas, Nag, Dhaman, Manyar. Clearing up misconceptions about snakes, he said, “Snakes stay away from humans and attack only if disturbed. Snakes, bees, mushrooms, flies are all very important for nature. Although they may seem small in appearance, their use is great.”

Bees pollinate, which is why we get fruits. Mushrooms and flies decompose organic waste and mix it back into the soil. And snakes protect the fields by eating mice and frogs. Snakes cannot hear because they do not have ears. But they feel the movements on the ground. They recognize ‘vibrations’. Snakes do not taste with their tongues. They recognize the smell in the air with their tongues. That is why they make ‘sn’ with their tongues. ‘Snakes never attack automatically. They try to stay away from humans on their own. They attack only out of fear. If there are no snakes, then rats will increase. If rats increase, the agriculture will be destroyed. That is why snakes are the friends of the farmer. Every living thing has a job in nature. It is our responsibility to protect them,” he said on this occasion.

The school’s benefactor, guide and school principal Shri. Shivshankar Mayekar was present as the special guest for this program. In his speech, he explained the cultural, ecological and religious importance of the Nag Panchami festival. He said, “Nags are our protectors. Snakes that protect crops and protect from rats are important elements in the chain of nature. We should respect them without fear. Nag Panchami is a day to honor the existence of snakes by worshipping them.” He also told the students that environmental protection, friendship with animals and nature conservation are important.

In-charge Principal Mr. Vishwas Sangale guided the students and said, “Nag Panchami is not just a festival but a day to preserve the relationship with nature. Snakes are important animals in the chain of nature and there should be sensitivity towards them, not fear.”

He also appealed to the students to be aware of snake protection, the importance of biodiversity, and environmental conservation.

“We learn life values through cultural festivals. “On the occasion of Nag Panchami, we should learn about coexistence, compassion and gratitude towards nature,” he said.

From his speech, the students understood the original objective of the festival, social awareness and the importance of every living thing in the natural chain. Finally, laddus were distributed as prasad to the students on the occasion of Nag Panchami. The program was organized under the guidance of teacher Mrs. Smita Pole.

The program was moderated by teacher Ms. Shambhavi Joshi while the vote of thanks was given by teacher Ms. Vishakha Pednekar. The students gained knowledge about environment, living things and safety through the experience of Nag Panchami program.

The program was informative, inspiring and memorable for the students.
