Fishing Community in Goa Celebrates Narali Poornima with Traditional Rituals

Panaji, August 9, 2024: The Minister for Fisheries, Shri Nilkant Halarnkar, led the Narali Poornima celebrations in Goa, a vibrant festival that marks the beginning of the fishing season. The event, organized by the Department of Fisheries, took place at the Captain of Ports jetty, where Minister Halarnkar offered coconuts to the sea as a symbol of respect and gratitude.

The ceremony was attended by Secretary, Fisheries, Shri Prasanna Acharya, IAS, Director, Fisheries, Dr. Shamila Monteiro, and other officials. The ritual, steeped in tradition, seeks blessings from Lord Varuna, the Sea God, for a safe and prosperous fishing season.

Narali Poornima, celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Shravan, is a significant occasion for the fishing community in Goa. The festival marks the end of the monsoon season and the start of a new fishing season, filled with hope and promise.

The festival is a time for the fishing community to come together and express gratitude for the sea’s bounty. The ritual of offering coconuts, flowers, and rice to the sea is a symbol of respect and devotion. This year, the celebration was marked with great enthusiasm, reflecting the community’s deep connection with the sea and their livelihood.
