Sweden’s Golf Scene Booms with Record 531,453 Active Players

Sweden’s golf scene is booming, with a record 531,453 active players as of August 1, 2025, representing a 1% increase from 2024. Juniors are driving this growth, with boy juniors surging 21.8% and girl juniors up 7.5% year-over-year.

The Swedish Golf Association has broken its membership record, with juniors making up 15.5% of active players, the highest figure since 2003. However, the influx of new golfers has brought challenges, including “theft and vandalism” and lack of golf etiquette. Experienced golfers also contribute to course damage, highlighting the need for education and welcome initiatives.

There’s debate around the digital green card system, with some arguing it’s too easy to get approved and play on courses without proper training. Annica Lundström, head of club and facility development at the Swedish Golf Association, emphasizes the need to welcome new golfers and provide further education on golf etiquette and course maintenance. Joint efforts are required to retain new golfers and ensure the sport remains enjoyable for all players.

Golf participation in Sweden has grown significantly, with 600,000 golfers and 650 courses across the country. The number of junior golfers has increased, with 61,839 new young players joining the sport. Female participation has also risen, with a 27% increase in Sweden, translating to 129,949 new golfers.
