Dr Vece Paes expired at the age of eighty in Kolkata last night..
Dr Vece traces his ancestry to Bainfol in Assolna Salcete. The Paes clan is believed to be descendants of a family with the surname ‘Kudow’. Quite a few members of the clan still reside in the village, some are high achievers. The uncle of Vece was a priest in Calcutta who called his brother Dr. Pedro to that city to minister to the sick as there was a paucity of doctors there. Dr Pedro was married to Marlaque Costa from Tolecanto Velim and the couple had several children three of whom including Dr. Vece were doctors. Another brother Manueto Paes was GM of Indian Airlines posted in Goa. A sister Melba Paes was a teacher in Kenya, and now lives in Goa. Dr. Vece was married to Jennifer Duton who was captain of the Indian basketball team. She is the great grand daughter of Michael Madhusudan Dutt the acclaimed “Father of Bengali’ poetry.
Paes, , was a midfielder in the Indian hockey team. He was also proficient in football, cricket and rugby and served as the president of the Indian Rugby Football Union from 1996 to 2002. As a
sports medicine doctor, he was a medical consultant with several sports bodies including the Asian Cricket Council, BCCI and the Davis Cup team.
The Paes family has contributed immensely to sports and its growth in India. Dr Vece was member of the 1972 Indian bronze winning Olympic Hockey team . His son Leander won the individual Tennis bronze at the 1996 Olympics and is the winner of a dozen doubles and Mixed doubles Grand Slam tennis titles far more than any other Indian.
