“Ganesh Chaturthi in Full Swing: Matoli Prices Soar, But CM’s Tax Rebate Brings Relief to Sellers”
PANAJI: Panaji market has been flooded with Ganesh matoli items and there is a sharp increase of 25% to 30 % in the prices, as compared to last year, stated the matoli sellers in the Panaji Municipal market. But the sharp increase in the Matoli prices has not dampened the spirit of the community from celebrations. Almost all the sellers made brisk business on the occasion since tomorrow is the last day.
However, the community selling the matoli items hailed the chief minister, Dr Pramod Sawant’s decision to stop taking sopo (market taxes) from them as a festival concession or rebate for them.
These matoli items come from remote villages from Bicholim, Ponda, Mardol, Banastarim, etc etc.items required to decorate
There are tender coconuts, coconuts, raw mangoes, raw bananas,raw limes hanging on the branches, forest and fresh lotus flower the pomegranates, jack fruits, tender cucumber, pineapple guavas, sweet corn, musk melon et al required to decorate pendal or spots in the houses where Ganesh idols are being kept for worshiping.
Matoli sellers Joaquina Rodrigues, Laxmi, Somptu Mahadev endorses on the increase on the rise in prices and others confirm that the announcement from the chief minister came as a surprise relief and since last two days, the sopo collectors never came to harass for collection as they (Sopo collectors) come in the morning survey the matoli businesswomen and businessman and went silently and in the evening they used to come and collect sopos but last two days, they never came. `No sopo collection has taken place as a surprise relief to them” they stated and thanked the chief minister from the apex of their hearts for the great relief for them for the first time.
