Mapusa’s Garbage Crisis: A Reflection of Systemic Failure

Mapusa, a town in Goa, is grappling with a severe garbage crisis, with residents expressing frustration over the Mapusa Municipal Council’s (MMC) handling of waste management. The MMC has faced intense criticism for its inability to maintain cleanliness, leading to widespread public anger and demands for change.

The MMC’s struggles with waste management have been exacerbated by the recent ban on dumping garbage at the Assagao plateau, leaving the civic body scrambling for alternatives. In a temporary measure, a children’s park at Altinho was converted into a garbage collection point, sparking outrage among local residents who claim the site is entirely inappropriate for garbage storage

The MMC has announced plans to educate residents on proper waste disposal practices while rewarding responsible citizens. Simultaneously, strict fines should  be imposed on those caught dumping waste in open areas.

The Mapusa municipality efforts to address the garbage crisis are crucial, but the issue of waste sorting and final disposal remains a significant challenge.

The key issues facing Mapusa include the garbage crisis due to MMC’s ineffective waste management, government intervention through GWMC’s door-to-door garbage collection, a carrot-and-stick approach by MMC to educate and reward responsible citizens while imposing fines on those who dump waste irresponsibly, and challenges ahead in waste sorting and final disposal.
