“Mahila Congress has to play an immense role across the state for the party to win in 2027.” – Yuri Alemao
All India Mahila Congress celebrates 41st Foundation Day
Panaji: All India Mahila Congress celebrated its 41st Foundation Day on Monday at GCCI, Panaji.
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, who was the Chief Guest, said that Goa Mahila Congress must play a key role in the lead-up to the 2027 state assembly elections.
“Their role is critical to protecting our state. For this dream to become a reality is very difficult. Mahila Congress is one of the frontal organisations, and hence, they have to play an immense role across the state for the party to win in 2027,” Alemao said.
Also present were Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Amit Patkar, South Goa Member of Parliament Capt. Viriato Fernandes, Goa Mahila Congress Committee President Dr. Pratiksha Khalap, Mahila Congress leaders Beena Naik, Pramod Salgaonkar, Saee Volvoikar (Vice President, Goa Mahila Congress), South Goa District President Mamata Maben, and other dignitaries.
Khalap credited Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for proposing the setting up of Mahila Congress as a frontal organisation to ensure equality and respect for women.
“The organisation has been raising issues concerning women. Our late PM Indira Gandhi is an ideologue for all of us. In a male-dominated society prevalent during those days, she achieved many things and worked not only for the party but for the country as well. She fought for the country selflessly. She broke Pakistan into two countries, and she also stood up against the US,” Khalap said.
“Goa Mahila Congress has been working towards the welfare of women. We try to be the voice of women who are in distress and those who face atrocities. We have been raising issues through various means, including agitations on inflation, rising crime rate, collapse of law and order, water scarcity, increasing accidents, deteriorating education system, scams, corruption, etc.,” she added.
Khalap further said that Congress Mahila national leader Alka Lamba launched a new initiative, Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, on August 20, the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, which empowers women to manufacture sanitary napkins.
“It was launched across the country, including Goa from Ponda, and the napkins are distributed free of cost. This programme is very close to my heart. It empowers women and openly addresses a taboo topic. It has been creating awareness on women’s health and hygiene,” she said.
In his address, Fernandes said that women can bring about change.
“Every one of you has a natural MBA qualification. Managing a home and managing the outside world is a very difficult task, and that is what you are doing. It is much more than an MBA qualification,” he told the women present.
Patkar said that efforts are underway to empower women in Goa ahead of the 2027 state assembly elections.
“Every mahila needs to aspire towards this goal. If you have the strength and determination, you will definitely achieve greater heights. The 2027 elections are going to be a decider for the Goan electorate. There are 50% women voters in the state. As the president of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, I can ensure that every Goan woman walks with dignity, every Goan daughter studies without fear, and every Goan mother feels secure in our own land,” he said.
