Goa’s Fisheries Sector Gets a Boost: Minister Halarnkar Distributes Essential Safety Gear and Launches Infrastructure Projects
Vasco: In a significant move to enhance the welfare and safety of fishermen in Goa, Minister for Fisheries, Shri Nilkant Halarnkar, distributed transponders, life jackets, lifebuoys, and insulated boxes to local fishermen. The event, organized by the Directorate of Fisheries at Baina, was attended by prominent officials, including MLAs Shri Sankalp Amonkar and Shri Krishna Daji Salkar, Secretary for Fisheries Shri Prasanna Acharya, and Director Fisheries Dr. Shamila Monteiro.
The distribution of safety gear is part of the government’s initiative to reduce maritime risks and ensure the well-being of fishermen. The transponders, developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), enable two-way communication and real-time tracking, significantly improving emergency response capabilities. Life jackets and lifebuoys were also distributed, with the government providing a 50% subsidy to eligible fishermen ¹.
In addition to the distribution of safety gear, Minister Halarnkar virtually laid the foundation stone for the installation of streetlights and a Sulabh Souchalaya at Khariwada jetty in Vasco. These infrastructure projects aim to improve the overall working conditions and facilities for fishermen in the region ².
During the event, Minister Halarnkar also felicitated fishermen for their efforts in collecting unwanted and discarded nets, promoting a cleaner and safer marine environment.
The initiatives undertaken by the Department of Fisheries demonstrate the government’s commitment to the welfare and safety of fishermen in Goa. With the distribution of safety gear and the launch of infrastructure projects, the government aims to enhance the livelihoods of traditional fishing communities and promote sustainable fishing practices.
