Two beach shacks on the calangute beach were gutted in fire on early Tuesday morning resulting in a loss of around 80 lakhs . no casualties were reported in the incident
According to eyewitness sources , the fire broke out at around 2.30 am early morning at sand bar shack belonging to one Manoj Naik and bay watch shack belonging to one Benedict Rodrigues . The fire was triggered due to an electrical short circuit . The fire soon spread to the shack located on either side reducing them to ashes. Both shack owners managed to salvage some of their furniture, but the elaborate décor, electrical fittings, music systems, fridges , and other items were completely destroyed While Rodrigues estimated his loss at around 30 lakh, Naik estimated his estimated to be around 50 lakh. No one from the central shack was present during the fire fighting operations as two fire brigades one from Pilerne and one from Mapusa were pressed into operation to douse the fire
the shell-shocked owners of the shacks were at a loss for words after coming to know about the incident.
“This year we had spent a lot of money to start the shack business again as we had no business due to the COVID-19 pandemic and now this fire incident has come a major catastrophe for us as we have lost everything in this business ,” said Brenson Rodrigues the owner of the shack fighting back tears.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo also rushed to the spot in the morning, and announced a compensation to each to the shack owners
“ it is very sad to see that our goans have suffered immense loss due to the fire incident and whatever help is need from our side we will give to both the owners of the shack” assured lobo
President of Traditional shack owners association Manuel Cardozo opined that the association has been demanding that there should be a gap of nearly 10 meters between each shack so as to avoid a catastrophe but till date this proposal has not been considered
Speaking further Cardozo said that the traditional shacks which are built of palm fronds should be changed as palm leave designed shacks can be susceptible to fire incidents he also pressed for the demand that there should be a fire Brigade service in calangute in case of fire outbreaks
Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira along with panch members also visited the site and promised monetary help to the aggrieved shack owners.
