Unique tree walk to help decode splendour of Panaji’s majestic green-cover, biodiversity
A unique tree walk along the banks of the Mandovi river on May 18, organised in the run up to the forthcoming ‘Mhadei Amchi Mai’ festival, is expected to throw light on the remarkable biodiversity of the riverine city of Panaji. The event will be held from 8 am to 9 am and will begin from the main entrance of the Bhagwan Mahavir Bal Vihar in Campal.
The event organised by Arati Das, co-founder of Tree Walk Goa is a part of a series of events being held in the state capital to put the spotlight on the significance of the Mhadei (popularly known as the Mandovi) river to the state as well as its capital city.
According to the organisers, the event aims to raise awareness about the diverse and captivating trees that grace the banks of the Mhadei river for the forthcoming ‘Mhadei Amchi Mai’ festival.
During the tree walk, participants would be in a position to develop a deeper appreciation for the remarkable biodiversity in Panaji and contribute to the preservation of these essential natural treasures.
“The objective of this walk is to familiarise people with the intriguing trees of Panaji, which constitute a captivating blend of native and exotic species. By immersing ourselves in the study of trees, we can better understand the interconnectedness of ecosystems and our own reliance on them. Unfortunately, the rapid concretisation of land, including the construction of new pathways, threatens the delicate microclimate of such areas, resulting in irreversible losses,” according to Arati Das, co-founder of Tree Walk Goa.
The Mhadei river has played a vital role in nurturing a thriving ecosystem along its banks. The dense canopy of trees surrounding Campal serves as a testament to the river’s impact. In addition to its abundant wildlife, the area is home to mangroves, further enhancing its ecological significance
