Congress Protests Marks Anniversary of MLA Defection in Goa
Panaji, Goa – The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) staged state wide protests today, commemorating the anniversary of the defection of 8 Congress MLAs to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
GPCC president Amit Patkar led the protests, denouncing the BJP for “buying” Congress MLAs and undermining democracy. “The defection betrayed the people’s mandate,” Patkar said. “We’ll continue to fight this undemocratic act and expose the BJP’s attempts to weaken the opposition.”
Leader of opposition Yuri Alemao, slammed the BJP. “Their greed for power has destroyed the trust of Goans. We’ll ensure accountability and restore people’s faith in democracy.” He said
Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira expressed disappointment “We voted Congress, but they joined BJP for personal gain. This betrays our trust. We demand loyalty to the people, not personal interests.” Said carlos
Other protesters also echoed similar sentiments, holding placards and shouting slogans against the defected MLAs and the BJP government.
The 2019 defection reduced Congress to a minority in the state assembly, enabling the BJP to form a stable government. Since then, the GPCC has sought to rebuild and regain lost ground.
