actress Parvati Nair Unveils Mechanical Elephant at Thiruvananthapuram Temple, a PETA India Initiative
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – In a significant step towards promoting animal welfare and safety in temple festivities, actress Parvati Nair unveiled a life-size mechanical elephant, Devi Dasan, at the Sree Balabhadrakali Kshetram temple in Thiruvananthapuram.
The mechanical elephant was donated by PETA India and Action for Elephants (AFE) UK to recognize the temple’s decision to never own or hire live elephants. This initiative aims to prevent elephant exploitation and promote cruelty-free temple practices.
Parvati Nair, a long-time animal rights advocate, expressed her support for the initiative, saying, “Technology is allowing us to perform our religious duties while assuring the safety of God’s creation. It’s heartening to see temples like Sree Balabhadrakali Kshetram taking the lead in promoting animal welfare.”
Sree Balabhadrakali Kshetram Main Thanthri, Sri Bhrama Sree Ganesh Lekshmi Narayanan Potti, added, “We are pleased to use mechanical elephant Devi Dasan, ensuring our rituals are performed in the safest and most compassionate manner. We hope this initiative will inspire other temples to follow suit.”
The temple’s decision to adopt a mechanical elephant sets a positive example for other temples to follow, promoting a culture of animal welfare and safety. This move is particularly significant in Kerala, where temple festivals often feature live elephants, which can be subjected to exploitation and cruelty.
PETA India and AFE UK have been working together to promote the use of mechanical elephants in temples, highlighting the benefits of this cruelty-free alternative. With Devi Dasan, Sree Balabhadrakali Kshetram has taken a significant step towards creating a safer and more compassionate environment for all.
