Adv Carlos says excise officials complicit in liquor smuggling rackets in the state

ALDONA: Aldona Congress MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira hit out at the government, the Excise Department in particular accusing them of being complicit in liquor smuggling rackets being run in the state and across borders.

Speaking to the media, Ferreira while referring to the recent seizure of allegedly spurious liquor from a truck that caught fire, said the issue was far beyond a single errant officer.

“This is all a racket going on in the Excise Department and I charge the government with being complicit in this. There will be someone very high up the hierarchy who is involved in this. It cannot go on without the blessings of Excise officials who are in the know, excise inspectors and finally somebody right up in the government,” Adv Ferreira, said.

“How did the liquor bottles leave the distillery? There has to be a permit. There has to be a transport permit. There has to be clearance from the factory premises and there has to be accountability,” he questioned.

“How can this go on without the blessings of the government?” Adv Ferreira asked, reminding the people that he had raised similar questions when a distillery in Bicholim was raided by the Gujarat Police and later sealed on charges of allegedly manufacturing spurious liquor.

A truck that caught fire at Colvale was later found to be carrying bottles of spurious liquor while the truck driver fled from the scene.
