SWEDEN’S MUSEUM VISITS SEE 5% RISE IN 2024
According to statistics from the Agency for Cultural Analysis, Sweden’s museums have witnessed a significant resurgence in visitor numbers, with a nearly 5% increase in 2024 compared to the previous year. The total number of visits reached 30.4 million, almost recovering to pre-pandemic levels.
The growth, however, was not uniform across all types of museums. Central museums saw a 9% rise in visitors, while municipal and state museums recorded increases of 7% and 4%, respectively. In contrast, regional museums experienced a 5% decline.
Interestingly, the reintroduction of entrance fees at state museums on January 1, 2023, does not appear to have had a major impact on visitor numbers. Despite more museums charging entrance fees, visits have continued to rise.
Skansen in Stockholm remained Sweden’s most visited museum with 1.4 million visitors in 2024, followed by the National Museum with 611,000 visitors and Malmö Museum with 593,000 visitors.
