Calangute Gram Sabha Takes a Stand Against CRZ Violations and Environmental Degradation
Calangute, Goa – In a significant move, the Calangute Gram Sabha has passed a resolution allowing locals to remove portions of their structures alongside the road, as per High Court directives. The meeting, which saw a wide range of issues being discussed, highlighted the community’s growing concerns over CRZ norms violations, sewage system problems, and the impact of casinos and migrant labor on the local environment.
Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira lauded the efforts of the Goa Foundation and the Calangute Citizens Forum for their successful challenge against the Outline Development Plan (ODP). The panchayat has assured that they will take action against CRZ violators and pursue the issue of well pollution in Gaurawaddo, potentially caused by sewage trucks discharging water at the Solid Waste Management Plant.
The meeting also saw discussions on the destruction of sand dunes and beach vegetation, with Premanand Diukar emphasizing the serious threat it poses to life, property, and the environment. The panchayat’s resolve to regulate SPAs, with a decision to only issue licenses to branded ones and hotels with standard facilities, was also welcomed.
The Calangute Gram Sabha’s proactive stance on environmental issues and its commitment to protecting the village’s well-being sends a strong message to authorities and developers. The community’s determination to address key issues affecting Calangute is a testament to their dedication to preserving the village’s natural beauty and resources.
