Calangute Forum Opposes Tree Felling for Road Widening, Demands Transparency
Calangute: The Calangute Constituency Forum has raised strong objections to the proposed felling of roadside trees for a road-widening project, citing serious environmental concerns. In a letter addressed to the Deputy Collector, Tree Officer, and Sarpanch of Calangute Panchayat, the forum emphasized the need for sustainable development and public consultation.
The Forum President Prem Divkar stated, “We cannot compromise the environmental integrity of our village in the name of development. There must be a balance between progress and preservation.” This statement highlights the forum’s commitment to protecting the environment while also acknowledging the need for development.
The forum criticized the lack of transparency in the project, expressing disappointment that no detailed road alignment plan has been shared with them, despite prior assurances from MLA Michael Lobo. They urged the authorities to explore alternative, environmentally sensitive routes through scientific planning.
The forum has called for an immediate halt to any tree felling, insisting that work should not proceed until a proper plan is made available for public scrutiny and approval. This move reflects a growing demand in Goa for responsible, eco-conscious infrastructure development.
