“Porvorim Residents Seek Relief from Traffic Fines Amid Poor Road Conditions”
Drivers and riders in Porvorim are worried about the traffic police’s strict enforcement of traffic norms, which includes hefty fines for violators. The government has increased the fine for not wearing helmets to Rs 1,000, up from Rs 100 and then Rs 500. Residents are concerned about being fined for violating traffic rules, particularly when navigating in the wrong direction due to the poor condition of roads.
The National Highway is undergoing overbridge construction work, and the service road leading to the petrol pump is in a dilapidated state. The patch of road opposite the Porvorim market complex has become muddy and slippery due to heavy rainfall and construction work, making it hazardous for two-wheeler riders.
Many road users try to avoid this stretch by proceeding in the wrong direction, which may lead to traffic fines. Residents have urged the traffic police to excuse them from fines for violating traffic norms until the roads are repaired. They request leniency, especially during peak hours when commuters face significant inconvenience.
Recently, the situation was exacerbated by heavy rainfall, which made the potholed service road nearly impassable. However, some relief was provided after the authorities filled the gaps. The residents hope for a more permanent solution to the road conditions and a temporary reprieve from fines until then.
