Calangute Gram Sabha Unanimously Rejects House Tax Hike
Calangute: the Extraordinary Gram Sabha was held to discuss the Government Notification on the increase in house tax. After a healthy debate, it was unanimously decided that no local household in Calangute will face an increase in house tax.
The meeting saw strong opposition from residents, who expressed their dissatisfaction with the new rates. The revised tax rates, set at Rs 40 per sqm for residential and Rs 200 for commercial properties, were deemed arbitrary and without proper consultation with the people.
The people suggested to the Sarpanch that the panchayat could generate revenue by charging commercial tax on commercial properties. Residents demanded greater transparency in the panchayat’s financial dealings, including expenditure on garbage collection and sanitation. Many residents, including those surviving on DSS pensions, expressed concerns about their inability to pay the increased taxes. the residents demonstrated their unity against the revised rates on tax hike.
Sarpanch Joseph R. Sequeira assured the people that he would take up the matter with the legal team, highlighting the struggles of low-income people and assured his support to the people [1].
